Renovation of Iconic Emily Brigdens Store, Irongate, Derby.
Matthew Montague Architects, are thrilled to announce that they are working with Bridgens on alterations and changes to the historic former Emily Brigdens store located on Irongate, Derby.
Brigdens began in the late 1800’s and they have had a retail presence in Derby ever since; firstly opening the store on the market place and latterly Irongate. Following works to the former Emily Brigdens store which closed in January 2023 both stores will relocate into the newly refurbished building.
15 - 17 Irongate is a Grade II Listed Building constructed in red brick with stone dressings. The building is notable for its late 18th-century construction, as well as its Georgian and Victorian design features. It has been identified as an important part of the Iron Gate conservation area and is considered a significant landmark in the city's history.
The building was originally two separate houses that were later combined into one.
Over the years, the building has had a variety of uses, including a bakery, a watchmaker's shop, a printing office, and a carpet warehouse. In the early 20th century, it was used as a shop and warehouse for a local department store. It was Emily Brigdens for over 30 years.
The exterior will be given a refresh to give the store a new look but the elegant façade and exquisite detailing will remain as is. Interior alterations will provide Bridgens with the functionality of space that they require. The new store will open in the Autumn.
